What is Discrimination?
Discrimination in the workplace means that you are treated unfairly or less favourably because of a protected characteristic.
What are the protected characteristics
The protected characteristics are the characteristics which are protected by the Equality act 2010.
- gender reassignment
- marriage or civil partnership
- pregnancy and maternity
- religion or belief
- sexual orientation
You should not be discriminated against on the basis of one of the above characteristic.
For example it may be that you are a woman who is being paid then a male counterpart who is doing the same work.
What types of discrimination are there?
There are different types of discrimination such as direct discrimination. This is where someone is treated different than someone else because of a characteristic.
There is also indirect discrimination which means that there is a rule, practice or policy which is applied to everyone in the workplace but puts someone with a protected characteristic at a disadvantage.
There is also a duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people.
What should I do I believe that I have been subject to discrimination?
If you believe that you have been discriminated against you should seek legal advice. You may also wish to raise the issue with your employer as they may be able to resolve the issue.
